The Planning and Community Development Department provides guidance to encourage growth, enhance the character of the community and neighborhoods, use best available methods to ensure communicative planning efforts, and much more. Partnerships with businesses and relationships with community members are essential in achieving city-wide interests and goals.

Feb. 18, 2020
The City Council appointed four new members to the Affordable Housing Commission. The first meeting of the AHC is scheduled for March 10, 2020 at 5pm at Dayton City Hall. In addition, the City Council reappointed one member and accepted the resignation of one member from the Dayton Historic Preservation Commission. Advertisements will begin shortly to gain new membership to fill that vacancy.
In addition to the appointment of one new member for the Dayton Planning Commission (DPC), the regulations have changed. In summary, these changes include:
- Residency in the Dayton city limits OR established Urban Growth Area (previously just the city limits)
- Commission can include up to seven (7) members, previously five (5)
- The DPC is now responsible for Parks Planning efforts, and will offer guidance to the Dayton City Council in making decisions regarding recreational facilities and programs
The City Council adopted legislation to authorize the maximum capacity of the sales and use tax to support affordable and supportive housing in the City of Dayton. In summary and to reiterate, this is not a new sales tax - it is a levy against the sales tax already generated in the City of Daytonthat the State of Washington retains. The City Council authorized Resolution No. 1406 and approved expenditures for GIS services for the City. The Department of Planning & Community Development will work closely on this development, and is eager to provide a public profile for community members. Anticipated data/layers are predicted to include zoning, land use information, critical areas, and more. Stay tuned for updates and more information as they become available.

The City Council has adopted Rules of Procedure for the Affordable Housing Commission. These rules establish guidelines for meeting proceedings, as well as define the meeting interval. As of this adoption, the Affordable Housing Commission will meet on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 5:00 p.m. at Dayton City Hall. The first meeting will be scheduled following the appointment of additional members to establish a quorum. Interesting in appointment to the Affordable Housing Commission? Nov. 13, 2019
The City Council has authorized a resolution of intent to adopt legislation to authorize a sales and use tax for affordable and supportive housing in accordance with SHB 1406.
The City of Dayton plans under the Growth Management Act (Chapter 36.70A RCW). As required by State Law, the City must periodically review the Comprehensive Plan, development regulations and the critical areas ordinance and update accordingly. These updates can include state mandated as well as desired policy change to direct growth and development. The Comprehensive Plan acts as the driver for future growth, development, capital improvements, and ensures ongoing protection of critical areas. On Nov. 13, 2019, the Dayton City Council adopted the 2019 Comprehensive Plan update and updated docketing procedures as recommended by the Dayton Planning Commission. The updated infill regulations are pending until Nov. 20, 2019. Following the completion of this update and adoption of all related ordinances, the City of Dayton will have completed the periodic update and ensured ongoing compliance with the Growth Management Act.
